Rebounding Issues Top Concern in 2014-15?
Clippers Forum » Clippers News & General Discussions
Lack of rebounding from SG doesn't help. This team probably would benefit a lot from one of those elite rebounding SF's (eg: guess who led OKC in DRB% vs the Clippers? Kevin Durant). Now the preseason rebounding numbers do paint a worse picture than the reality. Most teams at the least grab 71% of available defensive rebounds, league average was 74.5% last season. Most of your rebounds come on defense obviously, we shot really poorly which means more available defensive rebounds for our opponents, and then gave up really high FG%, which means less available defensive rebounds for us. So if they grabbed the same percentage of rebounds as the opponent, they would get out rebounded because of the FG percentages.
The problem is that the team was still bad even after adjusting for the percentages, so yes, it is a problem, it was a problem last season. It was a problem when they gave up 28% offensive rebounds to OKC, and it might continue to be a problem.
I think there was a thing showing that there's not necessarily any positive correlation with having a guy who individually grabs a ton of defensive rebounds and team defensive rebounding. Part of that is that sometimes when a guy is grabbing a significant amount of defensive rebounds it is also because the rest of the team isn't doing as good of a job on the defensive glass. So there's a balance, if a guy is grabbing a lot, good, but if it is really large, it might be a sign of some team issues.
Hawes is a better rebounder than guys he replaced so that should help. Not asking Dudley to play through a knee injury for over half the season should help.
We seem to employ a lot of back up bigs that don't rebound well, Hollins last year, and Davis and Udoh.
Davis is sort of strange player, a lot of big strong, husky guys are tough rebounders and good finishing around the basket, but he's pretty bad at both, but good at other things.
I think we should be able to be above average rebounding at PG and C, roughly average PF and SF, and below at SG, maybe a little above overall.
Rebounding is not the issue. Griffin, Dj, hawes, edoh, and baby davis can all board.. Small forward is the issue that needs to be figured out by the start of the season. We can't have guys jumping in and out of the starting lineup. Barnes we know will play so its either bullock or CDR gets minutes.
Doc Rivers disagrees with you... He plainly stated that the sf position has not come up in coach's meetings, they did however talk about how we have had the poorest effort in the rebounding department this preseason. FYI we are dead LAST in total rebounds AND rebounds per game so far. I hope that will change. Doc mentioned a lot of that has to do with the fact that our guards are giving up dribble drive penetration and our bigs have to rotate to cover and that leaves them out of position.
I agree with Doc. A lot of time smaller guys snuck up to DJ to grab the rebound cause nobody boxed him out
Getting back and boxing out are 2 things that could help rebounding a lot. DJ and Blake do not box out much. Rest do not do it at all. How is it Blake best rebounding numbers were as a rookie? Then he valued boards, now he leaks out looking for easy dunks way too much. Blake is great, but seriously, he could be better than awesome with attention to detail and playing the whole game.
Agree that Blake should be a better rebounder with his physical tools. There's no good reason he shouldn't average 11 or 12 per game.
I agree and that is why I'm not quite ready to crown him just yet. He should be averaging 11 rebs a game with ease. He's so athletic its ridiculous. He is an excellent offensive of rebounder but he is below average for a power forward on the defensive rebounding side of things and that is what hurts us the most.
Yes. And if it doesn't become top 10 at least, we will never win a ring.
Actually it's been his offensive rebounding that's been below average for a PF the last couple of years. Defensive and total rebounding he's above average.

Positive...Hmmm
Interesting how Doc believes the dribble-penetration is the root cause. It seems that most of our shortcomings are ultimately due to this.
Career 5.0 DREB/36 in the playoffs compared to 7.4 DREB/36 in the regular season.
Career 7.2 REB/36 in the playoffs compared to 10.3 REB/36 in the regular season
Career 16.9% DRB% in the playoffs compared to 23.7% in the regular season.
Career 11.9% TRB% in the playoffs compared to 16.6% in the regular season.
He grabs more defensive rebounds in the regular season than he does total rebounds in the playoffs. Durant out-rebounds him on the defensive glass in the postseason.
Hey, it was weird to me too.

Blake's lack of rebounding is where the "soft" label started. He won't mix it up inside.
Blake was considered soft because he got the crap beat out of him and he never retaliated like when ZBo abused him. Malone would have handed Zbo his buns.
Durant is a freak of nature with ridiculously long arms. If he chooses to get inside and be a bit physical he's impossible to stop unless you get physical back. Box him out. Keep him on his heels rather that rely on athleticism. No matter how good you are you can do nothing with Blake boxing out hard. While KD can't jump he has a huge wingspan.
