I believe Rex used to be an assistant coach for the clippers during the Alvin Gentry regime.
Does anyone know enough about him? I'm not sure if this is a downgrade, lateral move, or upgrade
From Wikipedia:
Oklahoma City Thunder (2009"2015)
Kalamian spent six seasons with the Thunder, including the final two as lead assistant for Scott Brooks. The Thunder posted a 316-160 (.664) mark during the regular season and was 39-34 (.534) in the postseason during Kalamian's tenure. Oklahoma City won eight-of-13 playoff series.
Kalamian helped the Thunder reach the Western Conference Finals three times and NBA Finals once. Kalamian participated in two All-Star Games (2012, 2014) as an assistant coach and served as a head coach for the 2014 BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star Weekend in New Orleans.
Toronto Raptors (2015"present)
On June 29, 2015, he was hired to serve as an assistant coach by the Toronto Raptors.
And then from ClipsNation:
Rex was able to beef up the Raptors’ defense despite some glaring individual defensive weak points on the roster, though that same defense did collapse in the playoffs this year. He’s an experienced, in-demand assistant coach, and will probably take over Mike Woodson’s former role on Doc Rivers’ staff as defensive tactician and lead assistant. This is by all accounts a good hire for the Clippers, and Rex’s presence will be welcome on a team that struggled defensively down the stretch in 2018. Welcome back to the Clippers, Rex!
And he is of Armenian decent... so you know he's a good guy. ![]()
Hahaaa. I think it is a great hire, as has been mentioned before, he has had great experiences with great staff and he is coming to replace (what many here consider(ed)) a weak link in coaching.
I had read great things about him in the years he's been in the NBA, but there hasn't been too much material that I've come across really.
Let’s hire Chris Kaman next
Kaman and Kalamian FTW
Rex Kalamian graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Think he started out putting together videos for Alvin Gentry. He’s been around a long time and has put in his time. At first, I was a bit disappointed in that Doc didn’t bring in anyone strong. Let’s hope that he works out.
If this article can be believed, he's supposed to be a defensive minded coach...decent according to them, but yes we will see
If six different franchises have hired him, then each of them must have saw something in him.
I remember him from Minnesota and Sacramento. Hard to evaluate his impact, given the problems those rosters had.
