Doc: I Made the Call to Austin on the trade.
Clippers Forum » Clippers News & General DiscussionsCF86- I think you should change the title. Doc, didn’t say he made the call to trade Austin. He said he made the call to tell Austin he was traded, big difference. Doc was stripped of decision making before the trade happened, and he didn’t seem like he wanted to make the trade even in the interview
I must be going deaf. Thanks for catching.
Thanks for the share, had not seen this. Also gives me an opportunity to talk about the Clippers (rather than talking about "division rivals").
I particularly love that he said this is not a team with stars... And I know we have cap space to sign a star. But do people here think that we can grow a star?
I am pretty sure Tobias is a budding star and will be looking to get paid like a star... I am not so sure he is far off from being considered a star. Also Trezl is playing like a monster and honestly has willed his way into the conversation.
If he can continue his level of play and clean up a bit (I think his stats can improve a bit,) he'd definitely be in the conversation. Maybe I am just biased.
Haha for sure. When you first posted it, I was like, no way he is going to actually try to say it was his call to trade Austin, lol.
Glad he is gone, just not good for any team beyond elementary school sports and even then it’s questionable
I'd love to hear Doc talking about West... or vice versa. Seems like they are operating on their own wavelengths, and making the best of their craft. I like this team as constructed, but would love to see what Doc can do with one "star" next year.
The key is having complementary stars... both in NBA skill and off court skill. Seeing true friendships in the NBA makes me happy, having played the sport, nothing is as satisfying than the bond you make with your brothers (and sisters if you're a girl) on the court. Something about competing in a team sport really creates unbreakable bonds (or at least has the potential to.)
So this squad, more or less, with a star... it will be a different team, but want more firepower now that LA has landed LBJ (yet looks very beatable.) Winning is the best cure, and we are doing alright - to my surprise and delight!
Very telling interview. This means he would never have traded his son as GM. Also with so much emotional attachment it’s clear he could never be unbiased when it comes to Austin.
Nice interview.
Didn’t know he had a connection with the former president.
Yeah maybe he should have asked the former president why he was so hellbent on offering condolences to him for not winning a championship while completely ignoring the ongoing tragedies in Chicago. Back to topic...Jr. did take the high road and should be commended for doing such.
What I got from the video:
Doc knew the wizards wanted Austin so they offered him Gortat. Kept saying “we” knew etc etc, Meaning he was part of the decision making.
Wizards wanted Austin. Meaning wizards made the call to offer Gortat for Austin.
Technically, getting rid of Austin was not really a part of their plans unless offered something of need for the clips in return.
That’s very telling

It’ll be interesting the decisions West and the front office will make this upcoming summer. How much will they offer Tobias? Are they only gonna add one star or will they trade everybody in order to get 2 stars.

I think that was Docs take but my guess is not the front offices take. Just a guess, but West is a great evaluator of talent and I don’t think Austin makes the cut, his performance for the Wizards is downright atrocious. I would imagine West didn’t want to just start rocking the boat like crazy when he came on board and wanted to have Doc stay on as the coach, plus Doc was still the decision maker lasted season
There would be a rift in the front office if Doc was lying about what he was saying in this public interview. no matter what anyone thinks, Doc is still has a say on what the team is, he is the coach. And Jerry West is here as a consultant and not a decision maker. That’s on Lawrence frank and winger and his staff. Not that I’m defending Austin or anything because he sucks with the wizards but I wasn’t for bringing Gortat either, I rather have Montrezl and Boban share the center position, even before the season began, I thought maybe Montrezl would get it but he is too small for that position so I got why they got Gortat. I truly believed it was between Austin or Pat who was going before the season began, whatever happened, we are better for it.
People all the time have a misconception of reality, I just think that’s where Doc is with this situation. He can’t actually view it all appropriately or accurately
Maybe you misread what I wrote? This has nothing to do with his coaching job this year, or even how he coached the starters last year. His perception on the Austin trade, that’s it.
Either way I think we are on a different page, no biggie
my line of thought exactly... and I am not sure how I feel about any of the scenarios that can play out.
