Analyzing John Collins' Game

Clippers Forum » Clippers News & General Discussions

Although I don't see the same diversity of offensive weapons in Collins' as what someone like Beal can do, Collins seems to have a lot in his arsenal despite being mainly an in-the-paint scorer. However, how he does this is quite interesting. He relies so much on many tools, like the double clutch layup or up-and-under layup (step through). In addition, he's really good at using the pump fake when a defender is in front of him. Another thing about him is that he's slightly undersized for a power forward at 6'9". This makes him slightly faster than some power forwards in the NBA. When you see him, he tend to be quite explosive at getting into the paint. Also, he uses a lot of moves like the euro-step and other spins to get around his defender and drive into the paint. He certainly isn't afraid to get physical with a defender while under the basket either, which can possibly get him a lot of shots at the free throw line. I'm very interested to see what this guy can do. Has anyone else seen video of him? Do you guys see the same thing I do?

Good assessment. I'm not so much worried about what he can do as I am our floor leaders getting him involved. Harden needs to take advantages of Collins meaning pick and rolls, pick and pops and lobs. This is where I can see CP3 as a good fit with Collins in whatever minutes he gets off the bench

I'm more curious as to how he does on the defensive end of the floor

Good points. Defense is one of those intangibles that is harder to gauge. We can see a lot of film on players working offensively, but it's not like there is a high demand on great defensive plays. For sure CP with this guy will be fun to see. CP's style will thrive with this core, as all he needs to do is keep those assist numbers around seven a game. I don't care if he even scores 0 points per game, but if he's getting others involved and setting them up, this will have been a great acquisition.

I hope he's the defensive rebounder we've needed.
