Chris Paul Fined $25K for Complaining About Referee

Quote:
The NBA announced the fine Saturday, two days after Paul sounded off on Holtkamp following the Clippers' loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"Some of [the technical fouls] were ridiculous," Paul said. "The tech that I get right there was ridiculous. I don't care what nobody says, I don't care what she says; that's terrible. There's no way that can be a tech. We try to get the ball out fast every time down the court, and when we did that, she said, 'Uh-uh.' I said, 'Why, uh-uh?' And she gave me a tech.

"That's ridiculous. If that's the case, this might not be for her."

The comments sparked debate over whether Paul was being disrespectful of Holtkamp based on her gender, prompting a rebuke Friday from the NBA referees union.

That's pretty sad if you tell your part of the story about what happened and your thoughts on why you got a technical foul, you get fined like that. Maybe the NBA should look into reprimanding the officials for that game for making such outrageous and biased technical fouls.

I must say I find it ironic that CP3, who told the front office that he wanted a black coach after Vinny was canned, is now having the finger pointed at him for being "sexist".

NBA refs are a serious joke anyway. They show their biased too much on a nightly basis. Would be really unique to see a real ref and a fair game. If they had actually checks and balances and they got penalized for some of the stupid shi* they do it would be a different game.

REFS,YOU ARE A COMPLETE AND UTTER JOKE. But you have a strong union because you get to protect the weak on a night bases and by weak I mean your lame members.

I guess I will get my fine now for calling them a joke.

You almost always get fined if you criticize refs, that's just how it is, no surprise there, he has the money anyways, sucks more for a guy like Barnes when he gets fined for stuff.

As long as the fine is in line with other guys criticizing male refs, that's OK... and it does seem to be. That "sexist" nonsense was ridiculous... she's just a very green official who lost control of a game, no matter what her junk looks like.

Kudos to the NBA... when this first happened, they said they were investigating the incident only because they ALWAYS do when officiating is publicly criticized by players. Kind of a "nothing to see here" approach. Hopefully, Rod Thorn or whoever's responsible for standards in officiating has a quiet word with her, and keeps an eye out that she won't hold a grudge.

I remember this rumor but I also remember it being completely unsubstantiated hmm....

Bottom line I think what CP3 said was stupid even if he was baited into saying it by reporters. I really doubt he was being sexist about it. If he was I would be really disappointed but considering his history I really doubt it. Just more media rubbish.

As for the ref I don't have anything against her. She seems incompetent but thats not saying much because most nba refs are incompetent and we have old dinosaurs like Joey Crawford who are even worse who are still reffing....

I think the bigger picture is how the team collectively "lost it" when getting smacked by Lebron and company.

Our team loses its composure way too easily. Have to stop whining to refs. It does not help. It just makes things worse. I think the refs dislike us as a team actually because of our constant whining. Even if its warranted it does not help.

The media blows most everything out of proportion so I wouldn't be surprised if CP will Marshawn Lynch his responses from here on out. Matt was doing something of the sort during his sideline interview after the last game. Good thing CP has the ability to pay this huge fine though. Bottom line is that this ref was so green and so incompetent that I hope the NBA does something to address this privately. She can't be trigger-happy at the most innocuous of comments. If I were to make this a gender issue, she isn't the best representative of female refs.

With that said, I hope CP and the rest of the Clippers including Doc would stop complaining so much and just play on. Having a reputation as a whiner is not something you want on the team, but yet they have it. Time to change this.

Problem is CP, BG, Doc are all notorious whiners. Even guys like DJ and Barnes whine a lot. Well Barnes is iffy but he has a bad rep so he is on a short leash with refs.

Athletes get called boring for having the same old typical answers, but once they say something truthful, the media will just blow it out of proportions.

Yeah, I agree. Just watching these guys whine and whine is annoying. I wish I could yell and say, "Shut up and play, FFS. Quit yer bellyachin' and just move on." LOL

I guess Doc's speech at the beginning of the year to knock it off didn't sink in.

Lol Joey Crawford. How that buffoon still has a job is beyond me. Gets my blood boiling....

That's why everyone hates the media. Bunch of weasels. But everyone has to bring food to the table I guess. Even when your profession is stirring controversy and ruining professional athletes careers...

Repped (+1)

Yup. Everyone has to bring food to the table... even cannibals Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_08

Very diplomatic take, my friend. Repped.

About the only believable thing in the media are high speed car chases

Doc is just as bad if not worse than CP and BG when it comes to whining haha so its a bit hypocritical/sending mixed messages. Part of the reason why a lot of people hate the Clips.

Some high-profile women in the basketball world are coming out in CP3's defense...

National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts said any suggestion that Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul would be disrespectful toward women is "utterly ridiculous, outrageous and patently false"

Paul also was supported by Becky Hammon, the former WNBA star who was hired by the San Antonio Spurs last year as the first full-time female assistant coach of an NBA team. "Chris Paul is a competitor & he had an opinion, I don't think it had anything to do with the refs gender," Hammon wrote on Twitter.

Glad to hear it. Equality should mean you can be called out for just plain sucking as much as any other gender or race.

She's not the first ref to have a short trigger giving out techs and won't be the last. We had bigger things to worry about that game than a ref with a short trigger, complaining about refs in a game where you get steamrolled just makes you like sore loser crybabies. Calling her out so harshly adds to our already bad reputation with the refs and is likely to make things worse rather than better. Wouldn't be surprised if the league assigned her to some of our playoff games, like Joey Crawford with the Spurs.

Exactly my sentiments... Especially when some of those techs are FOR other teammates.

THIS^

Double edged sword... the media is over employed and overpaid... there are too many videos, articles, interviews and too few substance.

However this does seem like a warranted fine. Don't think the NBA overreacted. Standard fine for critiquing a referee.
