Questionable topics: no sexual content allowed

Alright, just for the record, there is to be no pornographic subject matter on this board. No pornographic talk, no pornographic fav 5, no pornographic material. This is a Clippers/NBA forum where people come to talk Clippers/NBA, not things one might consider offensive.

I have no problem with people discussing that kind of stuff...Just as long as it isn't here. There are forums that cater to that stuff and everyone there enters at their own risk. CTB isn't one of those type of sites so please refrain from bringing in conversation one might find offensive.

The Fine Line Between Moderation and Censorship: The First Amendment to the US Constitution gives us the "freedom of speech", of course with certain bylaws. For instance, I would not be protected by the First Amendment if I were to falsely report an impending terrorist attack on Los Angeles that causes a riot (a la season 2 of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but I digress). Such an unwarranted claim would certainly cause panic, distress, confusion, and perhaps accidents/violence. However, If a simple post or comment I type or speak presents no "clear and present danger" (as famously explained in 1919s Schenck v. United States), then that comment should clearly be allowed. This is why I question clipper*joe's deletion of not one but two of my posts. Look, I understand that talking about adult films may or may not be a popular thing to discuss on a male-oriented website such as CTB (unfortunately it appears we will never find out, although I would guess it would be a popular topic). Yet, it seems like it would be easier to let the post simply die off due to lack of replies, rather than delete/censor them and not allow the public (ie CTB members) to decide whether they find it intriguing or not. As I foreshadowed in the previous paragraph, my posts did not present a "clear and present danger" to other CTB members, and thus I do not believe was justly removed. In all honesty, I understand that clipper*joe has to moderate this site (which is probably harder than any of us can imagine) and that it is important to keep the comments fairly clean because youngsters and sponsors are involved. Yet, I believe my earlier posts were not glaringly filthy, and to be censored was unmerited. To my dismay, I now find that I have received....

1. I deleted the post, not clipper*joe. I raised the issue of appropriateness because it was not related to the Clippers or to basketball, the primary topics this forum. This really isn't a "male-oriented" website, it's a sports-oriented website. Putting aside the idea of relevance, there was nothing lewd about your post, but pornography topics are still out of place here because there are members who are underage, to say nothing of those who may find pornography offensive.

2. You argue censorship and the Red Scare, to which I counter self-righteous entitlement and hyperbole. I also find it ironic that you would complain about being called out publicly when these perceived issues (restrictions or whatever, I don't know) could have been privately messaged to clipper*joe himself, instead of bringing more attention to it, trying to make yourself out to be a martyr.

3. 3,000 POSTS!!!

Foremost: congrats on 3000 posts. thats a lot of dedication.

To comment on your other two points:

to the first, I made sure to not break any CTB rules as outlined by David, and tried to keep things as clean as possible. As I said in what I addressed to clipper*joe, I would have preferred just letting my post die an honorable CTB death due to lack of comments, not censorship.

to the second, I do not understand where I came off with "self-righteous entitlement" - I did not once request anything besides equal ability to post comments and threads just like the rest of my fellow CTB members. This does not constitute anything beyond what other members are allowed to do, and thus I fail to see where my comments came across as "entitlement". Further, you may find it "ironic" to discuss this openly, but anything I am willing to say to clipper*joe privately can also be said publicly. I felt it was necessary to have this discussed transparently so that other CTB members (like yourself) can chime in. Also, using your logic, the moderator should have not created a thread for this, but instead should have privately messaged me. Lastly, this is not a quest to "be a martyr" but merely point out what I felt was an overreaction.

The issue of entitlement comes from equating moderation to censorship, rather than considering that you just maybe, without intending to, crossed some lines of inappropriateness, as your recent thread did.

The irony is you complain about public -though tacit- censure ("In front of everyone on this forum, do not tacitly censor my ability to be a full-fledged member of this great website and utilize my First Amendment rights...") when your complaints could have been handled both privately and tacitly.

clipper*joe made a public announcement to all members about pornographic topics being out of place in this forum. Your response within said thread (mistakenly) calls out clipper*joe for deleting your thread, and goes on to warn about the dangers of censorship and the first amendment and so on, using yourself as an example.

I think the mods here prefer to give the benefit of the doubt. I don't keep track of everyone's posts, so I don't really know your history, and I really don't feeling like slogging through your posts. If the mods have restricted your posting, I can only assume it's because of repeated issues.

Agreed. Also, the constitution was not written with the intent that people disregard using common sense so that the government has to control everything. Come on people, USE COMMON SENSE! You know what's appropriate.

Furthermore, this is a Clipper site. I come here to read Clipper news and it's very frustrating and time wasting to have to wade through all the crud that y'all post here.

The first amendment right does not reach into a private, exclusive, or specific entity. That is where guidelines and rules trump the first amendment. You follow the rules or you don't play. Furthermore, the 1st amendment right doesn't extend to the world wide web.

Under the first amendment, you are able to have free speech but not all speech is protected. Your rights haven't been trampled on, all we did was take down what we found improper under the site rules. Your subject was not a subject related to sports....That's the bottom line.

Just like I wouldn't go to a NFL football forum to talk golf, you shouldn't bring unrelated stuff to a Clippers discussion forum. That tends to get members mad. People seek forums to find specific topics they have a passion for, not to shoot the breeze about limitless topics. Message boards are specific, that's why they have a forum for just about any topic imaginable.

Over dramatic much? Do you know what blacklisted means? You haven't been blacklisted, you just decided to cross the line with a topic that isn't discussed here. People come here to talk Clippers, not porn stars.

You haven't been banned. You haven't been restricted, all we did was take a thread down that isn't supposed to be here.

The last thing I want to tell you is that you do not have any first amendment rights while on the world wide web.

Look at this way:

This is considered a home for a lot of people, including me. And if you were in my home and brought that same topic to discuss, I would warn you that if you continue, I will throw you out. If you persisted, I would throw you out and you could NOT throw out any first amendments right stuff cause it's my home, my rules, my guidelines. Well, this is a home that has rules and guidelines. You can't expect to do what you want and hide behind a document that doesn't stretch far enough to cover the web.

Just stay on point and make better judgments next time...

Not a soft spot but let's just say I have consideration for all here, not just one person's obsession.

I'm sorry I couldn't be here to moderate while all this was happening.. I was at a weekend camp and didn't see the threads. But honestly, even if it's freedom of speech, you're using David's site- it's his bandwidth you are creating by making posts, he's the one paying to be able to keep this site online. So if he (and his moderators.. whom he has given power) deem it inappropriate to post things like that, then it's not allowed.

I'm completely on their side obviously.. There's plenty of underage users on this site, including lurkers and guests.. I don't think they should be allowed to see things like that. Even YouTube- where you can post videos as much as you want- doesn't allow obscene videos. And the ones that aren't against the rules and yet are still inappropriate? You have to log in and have an account over 18 years old to view. It's that simple.. Even on other major sites, stuff like that isn't allowed. Why would it be allowed on a Clipper fan site?
