Reputation System Added

Hi guys I've just implemented a "reputation system" to the forum. You can give someone reputation points if you think they've made a good post/point. You can also earn reputation points by simply posting (you get 1 point for every 10 posts) or even giving away reputation points (you get 1 point for every 20 points given). In addition you can also get points simply by being a participating member (1 point for every 60 days on the board).

Hope you guys find this feature useful!

I really think that's a great idea, Dave! I haven't seen it anywhere else. It'll help make this board unique. And it'll also serve as some type of "useful note" about each poster.

Kind of an odd question, but I have noticed some posts that have gotten 4+ thumbs up, and some of the posters haven't gotten repped. Are we not doing that anymore? The whole automatic rep system?

I think the thumbs up or down for the thread means that posters like the thread topic, not the person who posted. But I may be wrong...

Isn't the deal,,if you make a post and people vote it down,,if it gets voted low enough it stops your from making another post for ?????? That way if you make too many stupid threads your peers can stop you.

Rep points are different.

It is possible...but I still suggested and advocate that you have to had at least 100+ posts to start a new thread topic. It will keep a lot trolls from the site.

If you can't post a link before you have so many posts, you shouldn't be able to start a thread. Now I know not all new threads are garbage but a lot of people post things have been posted before.

BTW I have lowered the requirement for combined Facebook Likes or Google +1 or Twitter Tweets to 3 (instead of 5). The thread must have at least 1 Facebook like or one Google +1 (e.g. 3 tweets won't do it). But 2 tweets & 1 like, or 1 tweet & 1 like & 1 google +1 will.

The "stars" pretty much represent how many rep points you have. The more you post, longer you're on the forum, the more you are repped, the more rep points you have.

So I have a question. I just got a rep. I had 2 stars and now I have 1. I have had 2 for quite a long time. So shouldn't I have 3 by now. Just asking.

^^You probably had 2 smaller stars, and now you got one big star. It's a representation of the rep points (hover your mouse over the stars and you will see how many points you have), so you can try keeping track of that instead. It says you have "203.8" right now.

Sounds good, I've pinned the site to my homescreen so it acts as a shortcut icon on my Windos Phone - an just recently my Android. The recent improvements have helped greatly! Keep it up!

I didn't notice prior a size differance. But I just was checking out a few others and now I can see that some stars are bigger than others. So I am not sure if mine were smaller or not. But I trust what you are saying. If you could check for me it would be great!

Also I am not sure about other phones. But I have a IPhone 4. There is a annoying side tab. That I constantly have 2 close it. It has improved slightly with the changes. At least I can close it now. But it still pops up 2 or 3 times when using the iPhone. I got so sick of it that sometimes I type trough the gray part not really seeing what I type. So it causes me to make more typos. Plz it is really annoying. I was happier when there was no side tab.

Is there anything we can do about it?

You also mention giving out a Rep. Can we give it out? Also what does Rep truly mean? I would like a better understanding on everything. So that everyone including my self is Very Familiar. Plus like someone asked. When we give a + or - vote on a topic. What are we really voting.

For example the Topic, who wrote it, where it is going, the comments.

I have found myself voting differently sometimes. I come up with my own theory on a + or -. Is there any specifications when voting on the topic?

Yeah I heard about the problem from other iPhone users as well, so what I did last week was make it so that it won't expand automatically when a mouse hovers over the + (or in the case of a smartphone, a finger). It's not supposed to auto-expand anymore. You have to actually click on the + to get it to expand. Are you saying it's still expanding by itself? If so I will have to make it stationary (i.e. not follow you as you scroll down the page).

Yes that's exactly what happening every time. It's the most annoying thing. It at least you can keep closing it. Before I couldn't even close it. But I got to keep doing it multiple times. If you could some how change it. It would be wonderful!

Giving out reps (aka positive votes) is the main way a member give props to another who made a good/quality post in his or her opinion. Having more reps means you are more reputable since more members have felt that you made quality posts. There is a strict rule about no trading votes and creating a new member just to rep another.

You can also rate threads thumbs up or down, but that is not related to repping. The person can, however, get repped automatically for a topic he or she starts that gets a high rating through the auto-rep feature I described. If a topic gets rated too low it could prevent certain members from creating a new thread for a week- see here:

I say No, 100 posts seems a bit much, and giving the trolls more power. The idea with anything internet related to to gather relevant content to the participants, why discourage content by not allowing full participation. Seems counterproductive on a public forum. If you want to exclude people why not form a group and just text each other? Plus some of us have other things to do than to constantly post, doesn't make our content less valuable.

I don't want to prevent newly registered members from creating threads because they could have a very valid topic to discuss right away, and they are always encouraged to start a "welcome" thread so we can all say hello. No worries about trolls or spammers because they are usually kicked off the site very quickly, especially if you guys use the "alert moderator" feature.

There is a penalty of sorts for posting a thread for a topic that already exists, and a moderator had to merge the thread. You can read about more about it here:
