When Did Lob City Become Three Point Clang City?

Clippers Forum » Clipper Blogs

There are two aspects to pro basketball -- winning and excitement. Me, I like excitement first. I admit I enjoyed Allen Iverson flailing away on those losing Philly teams. (But I was never a Philly fan.) If a team hits the Daily Double -- winning and excitement, that is ideal. It rarely happens to your team however. But if a team wins but is dull, like San Antonio, I would rather watch America's Got Talent.

A year ago, it seems the Clippers were on the verge of pulling that rare Daily Double -- winning and excitement. Lob City was more fun than a free pass to Disneyland. Plus we were winning. That is a true WOW!

Well it seems that Lob City has gone the way of the Red Car. The Clippers have lost much of their excitement. Of course it is early and I might be jumping the gun. But better to note it than ignore it.

Anyone have a reason why? I am baffled. It seemed that this was the model that Ballmer signed on for. His high energy screams do not work with a Spurs approach. They work with a lot of BG and DJ high fliers.

What's happened?

Maybe Vinny Del Negro was actually a great coach disguised as a not so great coach and last year was what it was because of the lingering aspects of VDN's genius, or maybe it is still too early to make any conclusions about anything yet. Now, being too early to make conclusions doesn't mean we don't know and acknowledge the flaws the team has, we already talked about it all summer, but that's different from sounding the alarm that the team is no longer exciting and/or going to win a lot. Also 3PT shooting is exciting....when it goes in

tend to agree.... a big fan of Lob City, and.... think, that like Showtime, it isn't such a detriment to winning, and.... it is LA.

two other Clipper eras that I recall fondly, was after drafting Darius Miles, Gentry would put some combo of Keyon Dooling, Quentin Richardson, Corey Maggette, Lamar Odom and Miles in for the fourth quarter, and it was an all out blitz.... super fun to watch.

the other great Clippers squad was before Danny Manning went down w/injury, we beat Detroit by 20 on the road @the Palace.... we had Charles Smith/Loy Vaught, Manning/Ken Norman, Olden Polynice/James "the Buddha" Edwards, Ron Harper and Gary Grant/Doc Rivers.... mad front line and a pressuring back court, w/a super aggressive Polynice.... 'nother fun team to watch.

i saw the score by accedent.. probably not even gonna watch it when i get home from work... What I feel is we are playing down to the teams we play. when we play a good team we will do better. I'm pretty sure... who do we play tomorrow? I'm still at work.

When Woodson was hired. His offenses are consistently boring and run too many isos. Get used to it because it's not going to change unless the coaching staff changes.

It's just iso, Iso, Iso and ball watching.

When it comes down to it, we can't blame Woodson. Yes, he is the assistant coach that runs the offensive side of things, but Doc is the head coach and has final say on how the offense is run. I think Doc is smart enough to know if the offense will be this inconsistent for a long period of time and will change the plans accordingly. Especially with CP at the the helm running the offense I think he knows when it's time for a burst of energy. Give the offense some time, it's only game 3. And ClippersFTW we play Utah tomorrow.

Outside shooting in hoop works better when you have ball going inside to outside. Having Blake outside so much kills that as no one is an inside target. So we just chuck up 3's.

That along with poor rebounding makes Clips look average at best. Truly Clips do not look like even a playoff team now. Hope it changes. Clips would look somewhat better if Barnes, CDR, and JJ makes some shots. CDR and Barnes have to be worse SF combo in the league now.

Could Bullock or Cunningham do better at SF? Could not do worse.

This board is like board is confusing. First you all want to trade Dj, which instantly kills lob city.

Now y'all want lob city back.

Me personally... I feel like lob city have us an identity. Doesn't look like we have an identity anymore.

Lob City is all but dead.. I just don't think we have that many good consistent players outside of Blake, CP3, DJ, Hawes and Crawford imo. I hate to keep saying it but Doc's GM moves have been horrible in my opinion

We took plenty of outside shots last year, difference is that we made them and ended up with the best offense in the league. Redick and Barnes have been worse than last year, CDR has been worse than Dudley and Granger. Redick has been pretty consistent most his career, so I'm pretty confident he bounces back. Barnes is old, a bit of a headcase and never been terribly consistent, so him I'm less sure about. CDR had his first decent season last year, so perhaps it was fluke, who knows, but he's been terrible so far.

You just mentioned 5 players. I think most teams would be thrilled with 3-4 good consistent players.

I criticize this team a lot on this forum. But it's only been 3 games. Everyone needs to calm down and watch at least 10-15 games before giving fair judgement.

hah.... what happens if we start those five and have Barnes and Redick come off the bench ??

I am to the point now that I don't even like Blake's fast break dunks. I see him leaking out so much, not even attempting to get a rebound, it is frustrating. I wish the crowd would applaud Blake for every rebound instead of every dunk.

BTW. Mark my words -- I never want to trade DJ for anyone except maybe LeBron. Live by our Big 3, die by our Big 3.

Yikes. I'll trade DJ for so many other centers including:

Marcin Gortat

Al Jefferson

Brook Lopez

Dwight Howard

Tiago Splitter

Nic Vucevic

That's great big guy....but how do would want to settle up Very Happy

In the Clippers defense, most of their misses they are wide open.

My problem at times is that they rather chuck up a 3 after an offensive board and 22 secs still to go and not set up a play. JJ is struggling to hit the ocean with a pea. Jamal has been given the job of beat the buzzer with a three (a lot of time he has to bail the team out on a bad possesion). We all know Barnes should only shoot from the corner.

We got shooters, just not pure shooters outisde of JJ.

So basically you're not interested in winning a ring anytime soon.

A little off topic, but I've been seeing some chatter about Gerald Green around here lately...CP3 throwing lobs to Green, Blake, and DJ....that's basketball porn lol.

If we can get Gerald Green, go for it!

Barnes actually is a pretty sucky corner 3PT shooter. Most guys are doing about 40%+ there, Barnes is a career 34.1% corner 3PT shooter, as a Clipper, 34.0%. Yes, one of the few guys who doesn't benefit much from the corner percentage wise. He's really not a "good" shooter in general.

I was sitting behind the visitors' bench and a fan said something to Durant. He smiled and confidently said "We own you". Last year I would have grabbed my naughty bits and said," Own these" Not really but you get the idea. We had a swagger -Lob City. Nobody on the team now could reply "You got lucky just wait" Unless he'd been sniffing liniment KD knows they didn't own us. This team doesn't look like the Bad Boys. Lob City shuts up the crowd. It's the same squad except Collison and Willie Green (Bring back Willie!). If a guy like Matt is in a slump shooting corner threes why set him up to shoot corner threes. Yeah lots of plays require that but it's setting us up to fail.

As far as Matt and his corner threes. A guy went to the doctor. He hit himself on the head and said "Doc it hurts when I do this" The doctor's reply was "Then don't do it. $100 please"

It is hard when JJ is in a slump. I'm a bit vague because I feel there is something wrong and I don't know what and I don't think it's a SF. A SF would be a huge help however.

Our only problem was a SF and as in days of yore there weren't none. I think Pierce wanted to come here. Everybody else wanted a paycheck. Deng and Ariza especially. You can't blame Doc for that. It seems that good SF's can be in short supply like good centers. Collison and Hawes were good pick ups and Turk is worth the $$. Could we have paid Aminu what he got? Not so if I remember. It looks as Doc's gambling on Reggie. Also this kid Cunningham looks good. The pros are spanking his rookie hind end as if he were in an English boarding school but time will fix that. Maybe he's a good SF playing small. CP, SG, Cunningham.

Maybe things will gell, or is it jell. Oh well. I hope it's by Dec. If so I can stop taking my Prozac and drinking large quantities of alcohol.

My theory: all of the NBA players, from bench jockeys to Top Tier Superstars, were great college players. So it comes down to desire and IQ. Ariza was a bum half his career but came to life when he had to feed his family.

I am sure Doc will find some small forward in the rough and turn him into our Ariza. Bullock? Maybe. Surely he will find someone.

Don't worry, be happy.

I am happy, no worry. I just finished a nice bottle of red and a cold hamburger. After half the bottle the cold burger tastes great.

Lob City isn't dead. It's just been in hibernation and came out for a peek in the last game. Lol It's time for the beast to wake up and what better time than against the Warriors tonight.

Bears hibernate in the winter. It is winter as you can see the cold weather that is plaguing our beautiful California. I expect the bear to wake up HUNGRY and more fierce than ever around March April in the springtime, just in time for the playoffs.
